Jalai’s (un)expected rise demands spotlight on local league

In the recent Fifa World Cup qualifiers, Zimbabwe witnessed the emergence of a new hero — Emmanuel Jalai.

His World Cup qualifiers debut against Benin was promising, but it was his performance against Nigeria that truly captured the nation’s attention.

Facing a formidable Nigerian attack, the right-back displayed outstanding composure and defensive prowess, effectively neutralising Ademola Lookman, a player renowned for his attacking flair.

Jalai’s display was nothing short of exceptional. He consistently positioned himself to intercept passes and block runs, demonstrating a keen understanding of the game. His tackles were clean and decisive, preventing Nigeria from creating dangerous opportunities.

Even when faced with the speed and skill of Lookman, Jalai remained calm and focused, making crucial interceptions and clearances.

He demonstrated the ability to match Lookman’s pace and strength, effectively disrupting his rhythm.
Crucially, beyond his defensive solidity, Jalai also showcased his ability to seamlessly initiate attacks, linking up effectively with teammates and demonstrating a surprising attacking threat from his right-back position.

These qualities merged into a performance that left many wondering where this hidden gem had been all along. Jalai’s display was no fleeting moment of brilliance; it was evidence of his dedication and skill.

Further proof of his impact, and the sheer quality of his performance, was the unprecedented praise he received from rival fans. Notably, even staunch supporters of Highlanders and Caps United, usually quick to criticise anything associated with Dynamos, were united in their admiration.

Jalai’s success can be attributed to several factors. Being given the chance to play at the highest level allowed him to showcase his abilities.

The coach’s confidence in him was crucial. Playing week in, week out in the underrated, but tough Premier Soccer League. Ultimately, his talent, coupled with his dedication to training, enabled him to perform at such a high level.

Jalai’s performance should be a message to national team coaches — Zimbabwe’s local leagues are brimming with talent. Coaches must be encouraged to scout and develop local players.

Providing young players with exposure to international-level competition accelerates their development.
