BULAWALAYO Social Soccer giants 70 Combination produced a spirited comeback to eliminate Cowdray Park Masters from the Founders Cup following a dramatic penalty shootout at Pumula North Community Ground in the past weekend.
Masters appeared destined for victory after racing to a two-goal lead in the first half, stunning their more fancied opponents and taking firm control of the contest.
However, 70 Combination, affectionately known as “Jambanaye”, showed why they remain one of the most respected teams in the league. They emerged from the halftime break rejuvenated and mounted a relentless assault on the Masters defence, eventually drawing level at 2-2 before the final whistle.
With the scores tied after regulation time, the match was decided by penalties. In the nerve-racking shootout,
Masters failed to convert one crucial spot-kick, while 70 Combination kept their composure to secure a 5-4 victory and a place in the semi-finals.
One of the club’s officials, Paulos Mpofu, praised the team’s fighting spirit and determination.
“My team is doing its best to maintain the respect we have as the most successful club in the league,” said Mpofu.
“The result shows the commitment from the players, the executive and our supporters. Fighting back from two goals down is never easy. As the 70 family, we applaud the boys.”
Despite the disappointment, Cowdray Park Masters coach George Sibanda accepted the result with grace, although he admitted it was painful to surrender a winning position.
“It’s painful to lose a game you dominated for long periods, but that’s football. You only win after the final whistle. Good luck to 70 Combination and well done to them,” said Sibanda.
In other Founders Cup quarter-final matches, Old Timers came from behind to knock defending champions Glenkara out of the competition with a thrilling 3-2 victory, much to the disappointment of the vocal Vuthela supporters.
Resurgent Mthala booked their place in the last four after edging Makwee 6-5 on penalties following a pulsating 2-2 draw.
Stars FC also progressed after a convincing 2-0 victory over West Commonage.
The annual tournament, which features all 60 teams in the Bulawayo Social Soccer League, is staged in honour of the league’s founding members. Among the pioneers was Chris “Zvidombi” Mhlanga, who is now the only surviving founder.
League fixtures secretary Blessing Adolph Jonga confirmed that the semi-finals will be played on July 12 at Nketa
Community Ground.
