MULTIPLE homicide suspect, Jason Muvevi, who was committed to Chikurubi Psychiatric Ward after being declared mentally-ill in 2023, is expected to appear in court today.

Sources indicate that Muvevi will be indicted for trial in the High Court after undergoing several assessments confirming his fitness for trial.

He faces five murder charges and three attempted murder charges.

The gun-toting ex-police officer was initially examined in 2023 by two psychiatrists at Chikurubi, who confirmed his status as a mental patient.

As a result, presiding magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi decided to detain him at the Chikurubi Psychiatric Unit for mental treatment and case management.

Muvevi, a gold dealer, allegedly went on a shooting spree in January 2023, resulting in the deaths of three individuals including an apostolic sect leader and a police officer.

It is alleged that Muvevi arrived at Chrispen Kanerusine’s shrine with an accomplice, Shupikai Muvevi.

Dressed in all black, contrary to the church’s doctrine, he was given a white cloth to cover himself.

During the service, he sat among other worshippers while Kanerusine delivered his sermon.

Suddenly, Muvevi reportedly went to his vehicle parked nearby, returned with an FN Browning pistol, and shot the preacher once in the head.

Upon learning of the incident, Inspector Maxwell Hove, the Officer in Charge of Hwedza Police Station, assembled a response team and proceeded to the shrine to investigate.

On the Hwedza-Murambinda Highway, they encountered Muvevi and attempted to block his vehicle.

However, he opened fire, hitting Hove three times in the head and killing him instantly.

He also shot Constable Tendai Mugova in the stomach and pelvis.

Muvevi then made a U-turn and drove towards Murambinda Business Centre, where he shot and killed Munashe Munjani after a brief conversation.

On January 14, Muvevi went to Mutare Boys High School, firing three shots, but missing a second complainant who had refused to give him food.

After the rampage, Muvevi fled the country and was later arrested in Mozambique.
