A MAN from Inyathi in Matabeleland North province set on fire a hut in which his girlfriend, her relative and her one-year-old son were sleeping after suspecting that she was with another man.
Stanford Ncube (64), who has since been arrested became suspicious after his girlfriend Thandiwe Nkiwane (49) did not open the door for him at midnight on Tuesday.
Nkiwane, Blessmore Zvikonyo (21) and Takudzwa Zvikonyo (1) all managed to escape from the burning hut but property valued at $3 380 was reduced to ashes.
Matabeleland North acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Eglon Nkala confirmed the arrest of Ncube.
“We are investigating a case of attempted murder and malicious damage to property which occurred in Inyathi on Tuesday. The suspect was arrested and is assisting police with investigations,” said Asst Insp Nkala.
“The suspect visited his girlfriend at night and when she did not open for him, he concluded that she was with another man and torched the hut,” said a source.
The source said the girlfriend, her son and a relative who were in the hut managed to escape unhurt but some property was destroyed.
The following morning family members managed to track Ncube to his homestead using the footprints and when they confronted him, he admitted that he had torched the hut.
Last week, a man from Inyathi torched a hut while his wife and their one-year old son were inside.
A quarrel between Priviledge Ncube (28) and his wife, Ms Sithokozile Mpofu (27) was sparked by Mpofu’s young sister’s visit to the couple’s homestead.
Ncube’s wife and child managed to escape but property valued at $1 300 was reduced to ashes. – @winnie_masara
