A HARARE woman has won a protection order against her boyfriend’s brother for harassing her.

Blessing Mungofa told Harare Civil Court magistrate Ashton Dube that her boyfriend’s brother, Dairai Kanoyangwa, was constantly harassing, insulting and emotionally tormenting her.

“I deserve love without being terrorised. I need peace, and I want him to leave me alone,” she said.

She said she was in a steady relationship with her boyfriend, Tapiwa, who is Dairai’s younger brother.

“He has made my life unbearable. Every time I visit my partner, he insults me, shouts at me and tells me that I must leave their home,” she said.

“I have been embarrassed in public, threatened and repeatedly accused of things I have not done.”

Mungofa said the situation became so intense that, at one point, she began to avoid her boyfriend, because she didn’t want any confrontation.

What confused and disturbed her most, she said, was the reason behind Dairai’s hostility.

“At first, I thought he just didn’t like me, but the way he behaves towards me and watches me, as well as how he reacts whenever I talk to his brother, made me think perhaps he has a deeper issue,” she said.

“I started to ask myself, maybe he is in love with me. Because how can someone fight so hard to stop two people from being together unless there is another emotion guiding him?”

However, Kanoyangwa disputed the allegations.

“This woman is a liar. Whenever she comes to our home, she does not behave like a visitor,” he charged.

“She steals from the house. My mother is blind, and this woman takes advantage of that. Food goes missing, small items disappear, and each time she leaves, we discover something is gone. I do not insult her for no reason. I am protecting my mother and the home.”

Mungofa also disputed Kanoyangwa’s response:

“I would never do such a thing. I respected his mother. I helped her with all household chores, for him to accuse me of stealing from a blind woman is cruel,” she said.

The court favoured Mungofa, warning Kanoyangwa to refrain from harassing and abusing her.

He was also reminded that the presence of Mungofa at their home was his younger brother’s wish, so he must not torment her in any way.
