JAZZ crooner Jean Masters will today take her act to Panzvimbo Bar in Mbare, which will officially open its doors to the members of the public following a long absence from the entertainment scene. The bar is now under new management. Jean, together with the little-known musician Simon Mutambi, will have the opportunity to be the first performers at the club under the new management and will be joined by several musicians, who will take part in a jam session later in the day.
Manager Joe Zoraunye said the place comes back revitalised and offering unique and top of the class entertainment, hence the decision to kick off its shows with Jean Masters.
“We chose Jean Masters because of her rising profile in the music circles. People should expect a laid back atmosphere as they relax during her performance,” he said.
Jean is known for her energetic moves during performances.
Now fronting her own band called The Masters, Jean usually fuses her own songs with hits from fellow local artistes. She is expected to play songs from the late Chiwoniso Maraire as a tribute to her.
Though she had humble beginnings, starting off as a backing vocalist for different groups she managed to curve her name as one of the finest female jazz artistes in the country.
Born in Harare in 1988, Jean first tried her hand in music four years ago, with the JM Seasons Band, a move that was initially met with resistance by her parents.
However, her persistence finally paid off, after her parents allowed her to practise with the band, having realised that she had a passion for music.
Barely a year after trying her luck in music, she went on stage during the band’s many tours and fans immediately took a liking to her suave voice.
Her music is very expressive and one can almost detect the sadness, joy or even laughter in her lyrics, without necessarily gauging her facial expressions.
Jean has got an awesome stage presence, and is able to move along with her fans, whenever she is dancing.
