In a move aimed at putting an end to speculation, Farai Jere, the chairman of the Premier Soccer League (PSL), has come forward to clarify the controversy surrounding his name change.
Because of the controversy surrounding his name change, many believed this would derail his chances of becoming the next Zimbabwe Football Association president.
At the centre of the storm was the discrepancy between Jere’s surname on his educational certificates, which lists him as Mutimbo, and his current surname, Jere. The issue had raised eyebrows among some quarters, with some questioning the authenticity of Jere’s identity.
However, Jere has provided his birth certificate, which confirms that his surname is indeed Jere. According to the document, Jere’s father is listed as Hudson Mutimbo, shedding light on the reason behind the name change.
“I changed my surname from Mutimbo to Jere in 2002,” Jere explained in an exclusive interview. “I did this for personal reasons, and it was a decision that I made after careful consideration. I have nothing to hide, and I am proud of my heritage and my identity.
“I understand that the issue may have caused some confusion and speculation,” Jere said. “But I hope that by coming forward and explaining the situation, I have been able to put the matter to rest. I am focused on serving the football community and promoting the development of the sport in Zimbabwe.”
