THE curtain came down on the Zifa Central Soccer League season at the weekend with gold miners Jessie Mine’s three-year flirtation with the league coming to an end after they were relegated following their 1-2 loss to Hardbody. The Gwanda-based outfit needed an outright victory against Hardbody to entertain any chances of staying afloat in the league.
Jessie Mine join neighbours Gwanda Ramblers, Tripple B Academy and Kwekwe Pirates who fell by the wayside in the mid season after failing to pay affiliation fees.
NM Academy, who were also battling relegation, survived despite being hammered 4-0 by MSU and will live to die another day.
However, there is still an outstanding match pitting correctional services Whawha and FC Platinum Under-19 set for next week.
At the top of the standings, Premiership bound Chapungu beat Vumbachikwe 2-1 to finish the season on a high with a record 77 points – the highest tally ever accumulated by a team which has been promoted from the region since its inception in 2010.
The win by Chapungu meant that Vumbachikwe will once again fail to finish in the top four for the second season running.
Chapungu have scored 72 goals so far – the best tally as compared to 66 scored by Hardbody in the 2011 season.
Second placed Town United were held to 2-2 draw by Silo United, a result which meant the border town side will finish the campaign second on 65 points while their opponents managed to get themselves a top four finish after ending the season with 55.
