Founders High to play host to Byo chess tourney

FOUNDERS High School will play host to the Bulawayo Champions Chess Tournament next week. Bulawayo Chess Club spokesperson Moses Mutiforo said the stage was set for the two-day tournament slated for 23-24 November. Mutiforo said the tournament would involve the best 10 players.

He revealed that the players were selected on their performances in all the monthly tournaments held this year.
“We have had about seven tournaments this year and we used players’ performances in all of them to come up with competitors for this tournament,” said Mutiforo.

The first edition was held last year at the same venue and was won by Castro Sibanda of the National University of Science and Technology.

He said they expected improved performances as the standard of play had gone up due to monthly tournaments.
“The standard of the game has gone up since we started monthly tournaments. I expect sharp attacking chess as players have gained more confidence,” he said.

Mutiforo said this year’s edition was dominated by Bulawayo Chess Club who are represented by seven players and Nust with three.
Mutiforo said the winner would pocket $200, with runners-up getting $150 and $100.

“We want to host a better tournament compared to the one we had last year, we want players and spectators to remember this day,” he said.
