Jibilika Dance Festival on

THE annual Jibilika Dance Festival will tomorrow (Saturday) take place at Courtauld Theatre with more than 300 youths from across Manicaland Province expected to showcase traditional and contemporary dances and other performances.

The provincial competitions will run under the theme: “Urban Roots”.

The winning two groups will represent the province at the national finals later this year. In an interview, Jibilika Dance Trust provincial coordinator Shingirirai Machiwana said in line with this year’s theme, the festival sought to merge and celebrate traditional and urban dance cultures.

“A new structure has been put in place this year to increase the scope of the festival. Eight provincial preliminaries will precede the grand finale. This year’s festival is aimed at telling our own dance heritage story to the young people while embracing urban trends. The groups will be tasked to create a dance piece that fuses traditional dances which represent their province and contemporary dances. Our ultimate goal is to make young people appreciate their culture and preserve it while at the same time giving them the liberty to be creative and use their own preferred art,” he said.

The project was launched in 2007 in a bid to promote and nurture talent among youths as well as creating employment for youths.
