Prisoner sentenced to 20 years for abusing inmate
A prisoner serving time at Rusape Prison and Correctional Services Remand, who was caught red-handed abusing a fellow male inmate in a toilet last year, has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for the offence.
Mike Trust Mumba (24) was apprehended while abusing a 17-year-old in a toilet by another prisoner, who immediately alerted the authorities.
Mumba was already serving time for unlawful entry, while his victim was on remand, facing three counts of rape.
Mumba, who was not represented, pleaded not guilty to the charge of aggravated indecent assault, which criminalises sodomy.
However, he was convicted after a full trial by Rusape regional magistrate Francis Mapfumo due to overwhelming evidence.
Prosecutor Marlon Makamba told the court that Mumba had been abusing the juvenile since January 2024 and the matter only came to light in November 2024 after he was caught in the act by another prisoner.
“The accused and the complainant are inmates but are not related. The complainant, a 17-year-old juvenile at Rusape Prison and Correctional Services Remand, was followed to the toilet by the accused on an unknown date between January 2024 and November 25, 2024,” said Makamba.
“Upon entering the toilet, the accused proceeded to abuse him without his consent. The accused continued to abuse the complainant on several occasions without his consent.
“The matter came to light on November 25, 2024, when the accused was seen abusing the complainant in the cell toilet by another inmate, Kudzai Muteyesanwa, who reported the incident to prison officer Tichatonga Saidi.”
A police report was subsequently made and the complainant was referred to Rusape General Hospital for medical examination.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, a 44-year-old man from Zunidza village, under Chief Makoni, appeared before the same court facing allegations of sodomising his 13-year-old son for four months.
Makamba told the court that the suspect abused his son until he ran away from home to Rusape, where his mother found him roaming the streets.
“The accused, the complainant’s father, abused his son while they were sleeping in the same bed in November 2024,” said the prosecutor.
“The accused continuously abused his son without his consent until March 2025, when the son went missing. The matter came to light after the complainant was located by his mother at Evergreen Market in Rusape.
“During an interview, the complainant revealed that his father was abusing him. The matter was reported to the police and the complainant was medically examined.”

Drunk intruder beaten to death
A shirtless, drunk intruder in Bulawayo, who claimed he simply wanted to take a bath, met a violent end after being beaten to death by a group of men who believed he was a rapist or thief.
A half-naked Gabriel Moyo, whose breath smelled of alcohol, entered a house in Nkulumane and was killed shortly after.
Five men — Fungai Guduza, Melusi Ncube, Edwin Maphosa, Luckson Maphosa and Ayanda Ndlovu — were brought before the Bulawayo High Court on a murder charge.
However, Justice Ngoni Nduna acquitted them, ruling that their defence was credible.
The court heard that on May 21, 2021, at approximately 5.30pm, Mercy Moyo, a tenant, was alone at home when Gabriel suddenly emerged from the toilet and entered the kitchen, saying he wanted to heat water for a bath.
When Mercy questioned him, he allegedly became aggressive and threatened her.
Terrified, she screamed for help.
Within seconds, five of her neighbours entered the house armed with a sjambok, hosepipe and sticks.
They proceeded to beat up the introducer, who subsequently died of his injuries while being transported to hospital.
Police arrested the five men, but the judge determined that they acted out of genuine fear that the woman was under attack. — Bulawayo Bureau

Forensic evidence exposes killer husband
A man from Emganwini suburb in Bulawayo allegedly murdered his wife and tried to cover up the heinous crime by claiming she was killed during a robbery.
However, forensic evidence proved that his claim was false.
Blessed Mpofu (29) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Maxwell Ncube charged with the murder of his wife, Shylet Siyabonga (21), and was remanded in custody.
The court heard that in the early hours of Sunday, Mpofu went to a nearby relative’s house claiming his wife had been attacked by robbers near a Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company substation in the Insukamini area while returning home.
He told the relative that Shylet had arrived home around 11.30pm covered in blood and unable to speak.
However, the story began unravelling.
Upon arriving at Mpofu’s residence, police found Shylet’s body on the bed, with blankets and walls stained with blood.
Mpofu then tried to direct detectives to the supposed “robbery scene”, but there were no indications of an attack.
Consequently, police returned to the house, where they discovered a bloodstained rake and broom, believed to be the weapons used in the assault.
The evidence recovered at the scene implicated Mpofu in the murder. — B-Metro
