ZIMDANCEHALL sensation Jnr Spragga riding high with the hit DAKA, hip-hop star Asaph and singer Noluntu J are set to headline the inaugural Teen Fest ZW, a new youth-focused festival seeking to create a safe space for teenagers to enjoy music, creativity and entertainment.
The festival will be held in Harare on August 22 under the “Smart Teen” movement, which promotes youth culture, creativity and positive behaviour while providing an alternative to conventional entertainment spaces often associated with alcohol consumption.
Jnr Spragga will share the stage with Bulawayo-based artistes Asaph and Noluntu J. The diverse line-up also features Atenda Chinx, Runner Rulez, Young Gemini, Sane Wav, Shone ZW, Pro Beatz, Trap Dee, Teymar, ThirstyFrik, WowRae, Guest String Quartet, Bhana, Mimi, Fujee, MC Tats, Andile Brown, Thee Ammartian, Hey Hey Preacher and Green Stars Traditional Dance Group.
The entertainment programme will also include MC Trayratee, MC Sam and Team Mamero dance crew.
Massive Events coordinator Tawanda Mutigwa said the festival was conceived after organisers identified a gap in the entertainment market for events specifically designed for teenagers.
“We realised there was a lack of events specifically tailored for youths, especially teenagers. This inspired us to create a safe space for them because most events in Zimbabwe run from day into night and are largely targeted at adults, with alcohol consumption often being promoted,” he said.
“As Teen Fest ZW, we are deliberately saying no to alcohol and championing smart teens. Teen Fest ZW is an upcoming premier youth festival and lifestyle movement designed specifically for teenagers and families in Zimbabwe. The inaugural edition aims to redefine youth entertainment by creating a safe, high-energy stage dedicated entirely to the next generation.”
Mutigwa said preparations were at an advanced stage, with organisers deliberately putting together a multi-genre line-up capable of appealing to both teenagers and families.
“Preparations are now at an advanced stage, with just a few days left. The line-up was tailored mainly for the teen market, while also accommodating adults. That is why it is a mix of DJs, live-performing artistes, poets, traditional dancers and contemporary dancers to give audiences an ultimate festival experience,” he said.
He added that the festival would also give emerging artistes an opportunity to gain exposure and connect with new audiences.
“Teen Fest is not just about established talent. We have also incorporated rising talent to give them a platform to break through into the mainstream,” he said.
Unlike conventional evening concerts, Mutigwa said Teen Fest ZW would be a strictly daytime, family-friendly event, with entertainment complemented by activities aimed at young people. The festival will have a zero-tolerance approach to alcohol and drug use, with organisers promising a secure environment where teenagers and parents can enjoy the event together.
“No alcohol or drugs will be sold, served or permitted on the premises, ensuring a secure environment where parents and kids can enjoy entertainment side-by-side,” said Mutigwa.
Beyond the performances, festival-goers can expect a range of activities, including a festival market, food stalls, digital gaming arenas, art exhibitions and dedicated spaces addressing youth mental health.
The event will also embrace urban youth culture, with attendees encouraged to express themselves through fashion, streetwear and their best “festival fits”.
Organisers hope Teen Fest ZW will grow into an annual platform that celebrates young talent while promoting responsible behaviour, creativity and positive social interaction.
