A 33-YEAR-OLD Zimbabwean national, Kudakwashe Mpofu, has been arrested in South Africa on allegations of using fraudulent documents to secure a lucrative government post, amassing over R3 million in salaries before being exposed.

Mpofu is accused of presenting a counterfeit South African permanent residence permit to gain employment at the North West Development Corporation  in March 2023.

His rapid ascent within the organisation led to his appointment as chief financial officer, a role he held until his recent arrest. Investigators allege that Mpofu began his tenure at NWDC as an asset manager before being elevated to acting CFO and later confirmed in the permanent CFO position, where he earned significant financial benefits.

Authorities took Mpofu into custody on Tuesday January 28, 2025 in Mahikeng following a probe by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit.

The investigation uncovered discrepancies in his employment records, ultimately exposing the use of fraudulent credentials. He appeared before the Mmabatho Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, where he was formally charged with fraud.

A bail hearing has been scheduled for February 3. If convicted, Mpofu could face severe penalties, including imprisonment, financial restitution, and potential deportation.

According to Hawks Spokesperson Brigadier Silas Munzhedzi, Mpofu received over R3 million in salaries while employed under false pretences, describing the investigative process as meticulous.
