Jonah Moyo conferred with Doctorate at Great Zimbabwe University

President Mnangagwa, who is also Chancellor of State Universities, has conferred contemporary sungura musician, Jonah Moyo with a Doctor of Philosophy (Creative and Performing Arts) Honorary degree at the Great Zimbabwe University 18th graduation ceremony.


Moyo received a standing ovation as he walked to the podium to get the award where he received his PHD regalia.

Reciting the citation, Executive Dean of Robert Mugabe School of Heritage and Education, Prof Munyaradzi Manyanga said Moyo’s music speaks on hope, life, love, individual and collective aspirations, which resonate with the everyday experiences of ordinary Zimbabweans.

He said Moyo was accredited as being a co-founder of sungura music genre together with the late sungura icon Ephraim Joe.

He has released a total of 44 albums and mentored other musicians including Macheso, the late Dembo, and Mtukudzi, respectively.

At some point, the late great musician Dembo used to curtain raise for Moyo.
