THE hip-hop scene continues to welcome fresh talent, with 21-year-old Wilton Newton Mapunganyika emerging as one of the promising voices eyeing a breakthrough in the industry.
Performing under the moniker Jonas Brown, the Nkulumane-bred artiste draws heavily from his upbringing, with the township environment playing a pivotal role in shaping both his mindset and musical direction.

Jonas Brown specialises in Trap and Hip-Hop, using his music as a platform to express real-life experiences and street culture.
“My inspiration comes from life experiences, the environment I grew up in, and artistes like Rick Ross, Future and Nasty C,” he said.
His latest release, Rise Above, featuring King Troy and Cymplex Music, reflects his personal journey and aspirations.
“The project is about growth, ambition and representing where I come from while pushing forward in my music career,” he said.
Like many emerging artistes, Jonas Brown acknowledges the challenges that come with being independent.
“One of the biggest challenges has been building recognition and pushing my music with limited resources, but it has also motivated me to work harder and stay consistent,” he said.
Looking ahead, the young artiste is focused on expanding his footprint in the industry.
“This year, I plan to release more music and videos, collaborate with more artistes, grow my brand and continue building my presence in the music industry,” he said. – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
