UNDERFIRE interim Zifa technical director Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe is still holding on to his job despite rumours doing rounds in the social media that he has resigned. Jongwe torched a storm last week when he said Premier Soccer League coaches will this year be required to have a Caf A coaching badge.
He said it was in line with Caf’s club licensing requirements but was met with swift and massive resistance from clubs, coaches and Zifa board members.
Calls mounted that Jongwe, who got his Caf A licence badge in August last year, should step down from his post for making brazenly reckless statements without following proper procedure.
During the New Year holiday, there was then talk that the former Caps United and Buymore coach had crumbled under pressure and called it quits.
However, Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela quashed those rumours and said Jongwe was still at work.
“Those were just rumours, Jongwe is still the technical director,” said Gwesela.
Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze refused to comment on the contrasting statements from the association after board member John Phiri’s position that nothing official has been done.
Mashingaidze told our sister paper H-Metro he would not comment much on the issue.
“What’s clear is that we’ve a five-year plan and we’re working to ensure that club licensing comes into effect. Coaches’ qualifications are just one of those areas we’re working on. We’re trying to ensure that we constantly upgrade the level of our coaches. If we’ve quality on the bench, then we can also have quality in the field of play,” Mashingaidze is quoted as saying.
The board has nevertheless said no such thing has been endorsed and therefore Jongwe’s calls must be ignored.
