A 39-year-old freelance journalist was on Sunday assaulted by MDC-T supporters while attending the opposition party’s victory celebrations in Gweru. Harry Taruva (39) of the Midlands Monitor was covering the victory celebrations for Mkoba National Assembly member, Mr Amos Chibaya (MDC-T) when the incident occurred at Mkoba Stadium at around 2.45pm.

National Police Spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and said investigations were in still progress.
Chief Supt Nyathi said they have since arrested an MDC-T supporter, Wonderful Marange (43) in connection with the assault case that occured in Gweru.

“As some of the MDC-T officials were giving speeches, Taruva approached an MDC-T supporter, Lovemore Rukadzi who had already given his speech to interview him,” Chief Supt Nyathi said.

It is alleged that Marange who was in the company of six other supporters later confronted Taruva before assaulting him.
Taruva fled from the scene and reported the matter at Mkoba Police Station.

Police arrested Marange and were still looking for his accomplices.
Journalists have this year been assaulted by various members of the MDC-T for doing their duty.
