JOURNALISTS affiliated to the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) in Manicaland last Friday brought cheer and smiles to Zororai Old People’s Home inmates when they donated winter wear and groceries.
The elderly had a good time as the union donated the warm clothes and food sourced from various partners and journalists.
Speaking at the handover ceremony on Friday, Zorarai Old People’s Home matron Sister Blantina Mariko said the inmates were delighted with the gesture made by the union.
“We are very happy with the young journalists and their partners who gave us warm clothes and food because this is how these elderly people survive,” she said. “They survive from donations.”
ZUJ Mutare branch vice chairperson Mr Dixon Chayeruka said: “We are delighted to be part of the event because most of the time we come here only to cover news of other people donating.”
He encouraged journalists to continue taking part in such initiatives that bring relief to the less privileged in the society of which they are part.
Some of the partners who contributed part of the goods donated to the elderly included Zanu-PF aspiring candidates for Mutasa South and Mutare Central Cdes Misheck Mugadza and Nancy Saungweme respectively.
ZUJ is a media trade union that seeks to protect and promote the rights of journalists as media workers.
It has a membership of 750 journalists all drawn from the local print and electronic media and includes freelance journalists who are not attached to any media organisation.
ZUJ thrives to attain better working conditions for journalists, urges unwavering professionalism from members, advocates for media pluralism and diversity and fostering a united media workforce.
