MORE than 480 inmates, who were released yesterday from Harare Central Prison under the Presidential Amnesty, have thanked President Mnangagwa, for granting them a second chance in life.
Harare Metropolitan province released a total of 960 inmates.
Bulawayo Metropolitan released 392 pisoners, Masvingo released 384, Midlands released 501, and other regions will contribute to a national total of 4,305 inmates.
The high walls of Harare Central prison exploded with whistles and ululation as 484 inmates celebrated their newly-found freedom.
Spencer Chaparapadza, who was serving 48 months for gender-based violence, urged other men to abandon abusive behaviour.
“I want to thank our President for this pardon, allowing me a chance to rebuild my life for my family and my country.
“I had served just 21 months for a mistake I deeply regret.
“We must respect our wives and to all men out there, please stop domestic violence.”
Brian Muzondiwa, who was released before completing his sentence for unlawful entry, said his time in prison helped him equip himself with valuable skills.
“I have learned to pray and become a true worshipper.
“I urge everyone to be God-fearing. I am grateful to the Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) for preparing me for life outside.”
Chandafira Chigo, who was serving nine months for assault, echoed similar sentiments.
“We are immensely thankful for what our father and President has done for us.
“This marks a new life for me and I believe society will accept my reintegration.
“The skills I acquired through rehabilitation programmes will guide me in living peacefully among my fellow citizens,” he said.
