ONE by one they will fall!
The latest statistic is a 22-year-old man from Old Magwegwe in Bulawayo who will spend the next four years behind the slammer for stealing a two-litre bottle of Mazoe Orange Crush during the looting spree of 14 January this year.
Methembe Moyo was part of the crowd that caused chaos, burning tyres and breaking into shops during the ill-fated period that left millions of dollars’ worth of property destroyed and stolen.
During that melee Moyo and others not mentioned in court stoned the door of Amagelang’s shop in the area to gain access. However, that didn’t’ work and he used an iron bar to forcefully open the door. He was seen taking 2 litres of the said juice by a security guard and some employees.
A report was made to the police leading to his arrest.
He appeared before magistrate Tinashe Tashaya facing two charges of unlawful entry and theft.
He did not waste the court’s time and pleaded guilty to both charges. Tashaya sentenced him to five years in jail. However, a year was suspended for good behaviour, meaning Moyo will serve four years behind bars.
Moyo joins a list of “prominent” looters behind bars such as Samuel Kapote, Takemore Bhunu and Steven Sango — will spend one, four and three years in jail, respectively. Kapote became a social media sensation when a video of him carrying a beef quarter hind went viral on social media and he was identified by a responsible citizen.
Meanwhile, Sihle Ngwenya (36) of Magwegwe suburb was unlucky after she was suspected to have been part of the protesters. She was found cooking six mackerel fish suspected to have been looted during the violent January protests.
In a similar case, a 28-year-old bachelor was arrested after he was allegedly found with a packet of sugar beans in his cabinet which was suspected to have been looted.
