A 47-YEAR-OLD man from Kariba died after he was attacked by an elephant in the resort town’s suburb of Batonga.
Scotch Gawa of 2228 Batonga, Kariba, was attacked by an elephant during the early hours of Thursday on his way from a drinking spree.
Zimbabwe Republic Police acting provincial spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Effort Chapoto, confirmed the incident, adding that the body was discovered with extensive external injuries.
Said Asst Insp Chapoto: “The deceased passed through his son’s house, Joshua Chingere, in Nyamhunga 3, Kariba. Having noticed that his father was drunk, Joshua accompanied him halfway to his residence and left him at a bridge between Nyamhunga 3 and Batonga area Kariba.
“It was only on August 29th, 2024 around 0700 hours that Jonathan Chitambo heard people making noise near his house in Batonga and proceeded to the scene. Joshua Chitambo discovered that the now deceased had been attacked by an elephant and made a report to Zimbabwe National Parks who then made a report at Nyamhunga Police Post.”
The body was conveyed to Kariba District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Assistant Inspector Chapoto urged the public to take extra care when moving in the Kariba area where there are continued human-wildlife conflicts.
