Junior Council fundraises for girls

The Padathon Fun Day hosted by the Harare City Junior Council recently at the Tomlinson Depot in Gunhill was a success after they raised thousands of pads and money to assist disadvantaged girls.

The Padathon Fun Day which was well-attended raised more than two hundreds packets of pads and more than $1 000 cash. Junior Council facilitator, Alderman Kudakwashe Marime who is also the brainchild of this programme said the project is meant to assist girls and women around the country that do not have access to proper sanitary ware.

“Many under privileged girls and women living especially in rural areas do not have access to pads as a result they use unorthodox means when they follow in their times which cause cancerous diseases like cervical cancer which is prevalent in many women. “For this reason we are raising sanitary pads for the disadvantaged and vulnerable girls who live in rural and urban Zimbabwe,” he said.

Guest of honour at the event, Phillip Chiyangwa donated $1 000 and said he was impressed by what the junior council was doing and pledged to offer them support in their projects.

“I’m really surprised with what you have done, some people are not even aware of the things affecting girls in the country. “Thank you for coming up with this campaign and I will continue to support you even in your future projects,” he said.

Going under the banner “Million Pad Campaign” the project was launched in April this year and will run until April 2018. The aim is to raise one millions pads, but so far the HCJC has raised more than 2 000 pads including re-usable ones.

People were entertained by DJ Black and upcoming hiphop artiste Taccino.

Harare Junior Council is a non-profit and non-politically affiliated youth legislative organisation whose aims are to provide a means by which senior scholars may obtain knowledge of civic affairs, report to senior scholars information pertinent to City Council affairs and create an organisation representative of all the senior schools within the area of the jurisdiction of the Senior City Council.
