A local squash academy is set to tour Germany next month as it seeks to impact on the development of the sport in the country.
The Zimbabwe Squash Academy will embark on a three-week tour of the European country from 7 April with 15 young squash players whose ages range between eight to 24.
The academy will be hosted by Squash Verband Schleswig-Holstein e.V. in Hamburg. Team manager and coach, Talent Mushunje said the sporting tour would also incorporate a cultural and educational exchange programme that will see the youngsters attending squash workshops and tournaments.
“We were invited by Squash Verband Schleswing -Holstein e.V president; Christian Oswald for the visit, which I think would assist in equipping our players with the right skills in the sport.
“However, the players are not the only ones who are going to benefit as the two coaches who will accompany the youngsters will also attend some workshops and we are hoping what they learn to improve their abilities and change the way they coach,” he said.
Mushunje and Malvin Mubure will be the two coaches that will travel with the children that include Bulawayo-based Ryan Gwidzima. The 11 year old said he is looking forward to improving his skills in the sport and hopes the tour will enable him to improve his game.
Mushunje said academy director Mashumba Mukumba created links with the academy after attending a coaching course in Germany in 2015 and was this year able to secure the tour for the development club.
He, however, revealed they have funding challenges as they have to raise $32 000 for the trip for airfares, accommodation and kit among other expenses.
Mushunje said they have engaged several companies and are hopeful they would be able to raise the amount.
Travelling players: Kuziva Mdungwe, Ryan Gwidzima, Roy Jambo, Tafadzwa Mushunje, Innocent Mukumba, Rukudzo Midzi, Polite Mubure, Tendekai Haparimwi, Chrispen Chimboora, Yvonne Mubure, Covermore Mutata, Nishyto Munyoro, Kuziva Madungwe
