THE price of bread has gone up by 10 percent from 90 cents to $1.
Investigations by Sunday News revealed that all the major players in the sector- Bakers Inn, Lobels and Proton- have effected the new prices.
National Bakers Association of Zimbabwe chairperson Mr Ngoni Mazango tried to be diplomatic saying the price of bread has always been at $1.
“A loaf of bread has always been a dollar, nothing has changed. Maybe you could find price variants in big stores but bread has always been a dollar and we are encouraging people to buy bread at that price,” said Mr Mazango.
He said, with regards to other confectionaries, each bakery has its own mixes which influence the price.
“Each bakery has its own product mix and I won’t speak on others’ behalf, I will only speak on Bakers Inn, where I will say that the product mix has been changed,” said Mr Mazango who is also the chief executive officer of Bakers Inn.
Last year bakers hiked the price of bread before the Government intervened.
The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Enterprise Development ordered bakers to revert to old prices after an unjustified increase last year.
Three of the country’s biggest bakers namely Bakers Inn, Proton and Lobel’s, which control more than 80 percent of the bread market have all hiked prices from the $0.90c to $1.-@peterkmatika
