MPILO Central Hospital in Bulawayo has castigated a doctor working at the institution after he indicated that the institution has run out of a drug that is critical in maternity.
A junior doctor at the health institution, Dr Mxolisi Ngwenya posted on micro blogging site, Twitter, that the institution had run out of Oxytocin, a drug used to induce labour or strengthen contractions during child birth and to control bleeding after child birth.
“Mpilo has no Oxytocin, a drug used to prevent the number one cause of maternal death (during child birth). We received a small donation from Parirenyatwa Hospital that lasted a few days. Healthcare guaranteed,” he said.
However, Mpilo Central Hospital chief executive officer Mr Leonard Mabhandi, said it was unfair for members of staff to cause alarm.
“He is an alarmist who is out to tarnish the image of Mpilo. How can he say this when it is a known fact that the drug is in short supply countrywide. All hospitals do not have that drug and he makes it look like it is the case of Mpilo alone. There are shortages of that drug and other drugs too nationwide,” he said.
He, however, said they were not sure when the hospitals will be allocated more stocks of the drug.
