Plans are already underway to introduce more sport codes in the second edition of the Victoria Falls Sports Festival next year, with organisers of the inaugural event expressing satisfaction with how it took off.
The event, which took place at Elephant Hills Hotel at the weekend, saw over 300 participants taking part in the four sport codes that kicked off on Saturday as Sports Tourism Incorporated sought to promote domestic tourism while marketing brand Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls as destination of choice.
“The event was excellent; we had a great golfing event, wonderful tennis show and amazing mountain biking and marathon. Over 300 people landed in Victoria Falls, which is a great start to the sports tourism festival. We hope to fine tune and grow even bigger next year,” said event coordinator Malvern Kanjere.
He applauded the ministries of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation as well as Health and Child Care for giving the event a thumbs up at a time the country was still seized with battling the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We are also not forgetting our partners like the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), Zimparks and all our sponsors. We want to thank all the media for the coverage and everyone who came on board as we launched the Victoria Falls Sports Tourism. I promise you, we are going to go a gear up, introduce more sport codes come 2022. This is an event that will grow bigger in future. We want to take it regionally and internationally. The sky is the limit and as Sports Tourism Incorporated, we are so excited and can’t wait for 2022,” said Kanjere.
The event was held under strict Covid-19 health protocols and guidelines.
If Covid-19 doesn’t wreak havoc next year, the organisers have all the reasons to be optimistic and excited about next year’s event.
