Zimbabwe’s national dam levels stood at 89 percent as of February 15, 2021 – a 50,7 percent rise from levels of September 28, 2020, according to the latest update from the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA).
The significant increase, the second highest in more than five decades, comes amid heavy rains received in most parts of the country during the current summer season.
“Between the end of October when the rains started and January 31, 2021, our dams gained 47.5% inflows only second to the 48.6% recorded at the end of January in 1974. The inflows are the second highest to be recorded between Oct and Jan since 1970,” Zinwa said.
More than half of the country’s dams were now full and spilling, providing relief to farmers and local authorities that battled to secure water in various parts of the country last year.
Zimbabwe has more than 10 000 dams including small weirs in various farms.
