A NUMBER of artists have joined the raging debate, about whether Zimbabwe still has record labels, which was triggered by Nutty O and Holy Ten.
Afro dancehall star, Nutty O, started the debate when he said Zimbabwe had cliques rather than record labels during a recent interview online.
This did not sit well with the Samanyanga Sounds stable as they questioned the criteria which Nutty O used to come to his conclusion.
Holy 10 and Michael MAGZ disputed Nutty’s claims and insist Samanyanga Sounds is a record label that has helped a lot of artists.
South African-based dancehall artist, Buffalo Souljah, has commented on the issue, and agrees with Nutty O.
“Standards just differ but Nutty O is not wrong, it is just the context he chose to express his points,” he said.
Female rapper Kikky Bad*** joined the conversation.
She said:
“How much did you sign your contract for?
“Brother, produce your bank statements. Let’s see how much you are being paid for monthly and the expenses that you request and what the record label is paying for.
“You don’t insult, you just have to bring facts.”
Plot Mhako, a Zimbabwean creative social entrepreneur, arts promoter and leading journalist also commented on the issue.
He referred to an interview that he once did and received some backlash back then.
“The local industry is not ready for bigger conversations.
“Nutty O shared some important insights and these boys feel rubbed the wrong way.
“They are talented but their egos are too blotted. They should message each other.
“When I said this last year some missed the point and caught feelings.”
