SUPREME Court judge, Justice Rita Makarau, and retired High Court judge, Justice Moses Chinhengo, have been appointed to serve on the Namibian bench with effect from tomorrow and September respectively.
Justice Makarau will act in the Namibian Supreme Court, while Justice Chinhengo will serve as Namibian High Court judge.
Justice Makarau is a former Judge President of the High Court of Zimbabwe and also served as chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.
Justice Chinhengo is a retired judge of the High Court of Botswana and is currently acting as a Lesotho Court of Appeal judge.
In 2021, he also served as an acting judge of the Namibian Supreme Court.
The Namibian Judicial Service Commission (JSC), announced the appointments on Wednesday evening.
“The Judicial Services Commission congratulates the acting judges on their appointments and wishes them well in the execution of their onerous tasks.”
“Lady Rita Makarau has been appointed as an acting Judge of the Supreme Court from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024.
“Justice Moses Chinhengo has been appointed as an acting Judge of the High Court for the period 18 September 2023 to 31 December 2023,” reads a statement from the Namibian JSC.
Justices Makarau and Chinhengo are not the first Zimbabwean judges to serve on the Namibian bench.
The late Justice Simpson Mutambanengwe served as a High Court judge and also acted as Chief Justice of Namibia.
Other justices who also served on the Namibian bench are Maphios Cheda, Mavis Gibson, and the late John Manyarara.
