Zimbabwe’s legal fraternity should champion a justice system that is inclusive, equitable and rooted in the country’s African values, the Permanent Secretary for Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Mrs Vimbai Nyemba, has said.
She made these remarks during her keynote address at the 2025 Law Society of Zimbabwe Summer School, that was held in Nyanga last week. The summer school was running under the theme, “Building an Inclusive Justice System: Legal Pathways to Equality in Zimbabwe and Beyond”.
Speaking to legal professionals gathered at the event, Mrs Nyemba emphasised that justice must leave no one behind, aligning with global development goals and reflecting the spirit of Ubuntu.
She noted that inclusion and equality are not foreign ideals, but universal principles deeply embedded in African philosophy.
“Zimbabwe must continue to lead by example. Inclusion and equality are not Western ideals but values that reflect Ubuntu, our African philosophy of shared humanity,” she said.
“Justice must embody who we are as a people; diverse, resilient and united in our pursuit of fairness for all.”
Mrs Nyemba urged legal practitioners to think beyond the courtroom and view justice as a tool for societal transformation.
She said the law should not only regulate but also liberate, empower and unite communities.
“Justice is not just about what happens in the courtroom. It is about the dignity we restore, the voices we amplify, and the hope we sustain in the hearts of our people.”
Mrs Nyemba challenged attendees to reflect on how they could contribute to a justice system that upholds diversity, equity and inclusion.
Mrs Nyemba also lauded the Law Society of Zimbabwe for organising the Summer School, describing it as a critical platform for dialogue and innovation. She highlighted its contribution to the nation’s broader vision of building a just, democratic, and inclusive society.
