The City of Kadoma has availed 30 hectares of land to the Chinhoyi University of Technology for an expansion programme that would see the institution building a campus in the town. CUT, which is on an expansion drive, is also in the process of establishing the very first medical school in Mashonaland West province through a partnership with Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital. The new medical school is expected to solve shortages of doctors across the country.
CUT spokesperson Dr Tapera Musekiwa confirmed this new development, but could not give more details on the deal.
University sources said the land would be used for the construction of a new state-of-the-art faculty.
Outgoing Kadoma mayor Muchineripi Chinyanganya last week said it was a privilege that the city would now have a university campus.
“As part of the achievements of this outgoing council we are proud to have signed a memorandum with Chinhoyi University of Technology over land donated to the institution. We had already secured the land for a tertiary institution way back,” he said.
Chinyanganya said the university would temporarily use defunct council properties for lectures.
“The university can utilise some of our old buildings such as beer halls to create some temporary lecture rooms while construction of permanent structures is underway,” he said. He said the university was likely to start construction soon.
“Around early next year we expect them to start construction,” he said. The expansion of the university comes as a huge relief to the city, as Kadoma was the only city countrywide that had no higher and tertiary education facilities including even a polytechnic.
