INNOCENT Kaia marked his return to Zimbabwe’s Test side in emphatic fashion, producing a maiden Test century to put the Chevrons in a commanding position against Bangladesh in the one-off Test at Harare Sports Club.

The 33-year-old opener, recalled to the national Test team after more than three years on the sidelines, delivered a composed and assured innings to register his highest score in the longest format of the game.

His century came after Zimbabwe’s bowlers skittled Bangladesh for just 140, providing the hosts with the ideal platform to take control of the contest.

Kaia played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s response alongside Ben Curran, with the pair sharing a crucial 73-run opening partnership that wiped out the visitors’ early advantage.

Having reached his half-century with confidence, Kaia went on to convert it into a well-deserved maiden Test hundred on the second day, displaying excellent temperament and sound shot selection against the Bangladesh attack.

The innings capped an encouraging run of form for Kaia, who recently impressed during the Zimbabwe A series against Bangladesh Emerging, strengthening his case for a return to the senior national side.

Kaia was eventually dismissed for a superb 140.

“It’s a very special feeling to score my first Test century for Zimbabwe. Every player dreams of reaching three figures in Test cricket, and I’m grateful that I could contribute to the team in such an important match.

“Being recalled after some time away from the Test side motivated me to work even harder. I wanted to repay the faith the selectors and coaches showed in me by making a meaningful contribution. The plan was simple, stay patient, value every ball and build partnerships. Once I settled in, I backed my strengths and focused on batting for as long as possible.”

“The bowlers gave us a fantastic platform by restricting Bangladesh to a low total.

“As batsmen, our responsibility was to make that effort count and put the team in a strong position. This innings gives me confidence, but the job is not finished. The most important thing is helping Zimbabwe win the Test, and that’s what we are all focused on.”
