EXPERIENCED top-order batter Innocent Kaia has earned a recall to the Zimbabwe national cricket team for the upcoming home series against Bangladesh, providing the Chevrons with additional experience as they look to make a strong start to their international campaign.

The 33-year-old returns to the national setup after a period away from international cricket, with selectors backing his ability to strengthen Zimbabwe’s batting department ahead of what is expected to be a demanding series against the Tigers.

Kaia’s inclusion marks another chapter in his career.  Having spent years proving himself in domestic cricket before breaking into the national side, the right-handed batter has become one of the country’s most experienced top-order options.

He made his international breakthrough in 2021 before establishing himself in the One-Day International side. His finest moment came in 2022 when he scored a memorable maiden ODI century against Bangladesh, helping Zimbabwe secure a historic series victory after successfully chasing a target of more than 300 runs.

Speaking on his recall, Kaia said he is grateful.

“I am honoured and grateful to be back in the Zimbabwe squad. Representing my country has always been one of the greatest privileges of my career, and this recall means a lot to me.

“I have continued working hard during my time away from international cricket, and it is rewarding to see that effort recognised.”

“Every player wants to wear the national colours, so getting another opportunity is something I do not take lightly. I understand the responsibility that comes with representing Zimbabwe, and I am determined to make the most of this chance,” said Kaia.

“Bangladesh are a quality side and we know they will provide a tough challenge. However, playing at home gives us confidence, and as a team we are looking forward to competing strongly and putting in performances that our supporters can be proud of.”

“Personally, my focus is on contributing in whatever way the team requires. Whether it is building partnerships, providing stability at the top of the order or helping younger players around the group, I want to play my role in helping Zimbabwe achieve success.”

“I have gained valuable experience throughout my career, both in domestic and international cricket.

“Those experiences have taught me the importance of patience, discipline and consistency, and I believe they have made me a better cricketer and a better person.”

He added, “The atmosphere in the squad is positive and there is a lot of talent coming through. It is encouraging to see the hunger and ambition among the younger players, and as one of the more experienced members of the group, I hope I can share some of what I have learnt over the years.”
