Cde Kanengoni, whose Chimurenga name was Cde Kudzonga Mabhunu, died at West End Hospital after a short illness.
His body was yesterday flown to his Whitecliff Farm in Concession where speakers described him as a distinguished cadre who dedicated his life to serving Zimbabwe.
The body is expected at One Commando Barracks at 6:30am today before it is taken to Stodart Hall in Mbare an hour later for body viewing.
Addressing mourners at the farm yesterday afternoon, Zanu-PF secretary for security and Minister of State Security in the President’s Office Cde Sydney Sekeramayi described Cde Kanengoni as fearless and reliable.
“His death is a loss to the whole nation and it is his contribution to Zimbabwe that has determined his hero status.
“As a country, this has been a difficult week for us. Retired Major General Maseko died this week and we buried him today (yesterday) at the National Heroes Acre.
“Kanengoni anga ari munhu akasimba kwete panyama chete, asi nemupfungwa.”
Cde Sekeramayi said he worked with Cde Kanengoni in the President’s Department between 1988 and 2000.
During that time, Cde Sekeramayi said, Cde Kanengoni displayed high levels of discipline and bravery.
“The President is out of the country, but he is aware of what is happening here. We communicated this to him.
“Tomorrow Acting President Joice Mujuru will speak at the National Heroes Acre, but we should know the work that Kanengoni has done.
“Now as we go to elections, let us go to all wards and make sure that we defend our independence.
“Tikaita zvekutamba nezvimbwasungata izvi nyika inodzokera kuvarungu. Let us remain united as a party and ensure that we win the next elections.”
Indigenisation, Youth and Empowerment Minister Saviour Kasukuwere thanked Zanu-PF for declaring Cde Kanengoni a national hero.
“It is not easy to climb on top of a mountain. It is not easy to be accorded such status and as Mashonaland Central Province, we feel that there was no better way of honouring Cde Kanengoni than according him national hero status.
“In return as a province let us go and vote for President Mugabe and Zanu-PF in the next elections.”
Minister Kasukuwere said Cde Kanengoni took great risk to liberate Zimbabwe and ensure that people repossessed the country’s wealth.
He said it was important for Zimbabweans to remain resolute and ensure total empowerment of ordinary Zimbabweans.
“President Mugabe is one of the few leaders in the world who stand for his responsibility.
“In President Mugabe we have an unshakeable leader who is keen to see total empowerment of his people,” he said.
