TOP Under-14 girls junior player, Karen Machisa, put up a good performance at the ITF/CAT African Junior Circuit in Gaborone, Botswana, this week to win both the single and doubles titles. The circuit, which began on Monday, ended on Wednesday and was targeting Under-12 and Under-14 players.
Machisa beat Sylvia Schultz of Namibia 6-2, 6-2 in the finals on Wednesday.
She then teamed up with Schultz in the doubles matches to beat Botwsana’s pair of Tsiang Tshegofatso and Makolo Marang 7-5, 6-0 to claim the title.
Mehluli Sibanda, who is the top player for the boys in the same age group, found the going tough as he lost to Morais Eduardo of Angola 4-6, 5-7 in the singles semi-finals.
Tadiwa Chigaazira lost to Fernando Andre of Angola 0-6, 0-6.
Sibanda then dismissed Chigaazira 2-6, 0-6 in the third and fourth place play-offs.
In the doubles Sibanda teamed up with Gawanab Dantag and they lost to Eduardo and Fernando Andre 3-6, 3-6 in the finals.
In the Under-12 girls category Vimbai Moyo lost to Tsiang Tshegofatso of Botswana 1-6, 0-6.
However, Moyo and her partner Charlotte Zhuwakini lost to Rufaro Magariro and her South African partner Mokone Amukelani 7-6(5), 6-4.
Zimbabwe had sent a team of 15 players for the circuit with the lime light falling on Machisa and Sibanda as they are ranked among the top junior players in the country.
The two also had an opportunity to attend a two-day training camp in Gaborone before the competition started on Sunday.
For their efforts, Zimbabwe got two gold medals, three silver and one bronze medal from the competition.
The second leg of the circuit will be held in Maputo, Mozambique from September 21 to 24.
