Kariba officials expected at Chinhoyi court

Walter Nyamukondiwa Kariba Bureau
KARIBA Municipality finance director Saratiere Chitenhe and MDC Alliance councillor Tendai Mapondera (Ward 5) who were arrested on Monday, are now expected to appear before a Chinhoyi Magistrate tomorrow.

The development comes after it emerged that there was no magistrate to preside over the initial remand hearing as the Kariba resident magistrate Mr Tawanda Mhlanga is said to be off duty.

Indications are that the two will be transported to Chinhoyi this evening or early tomorrow morning.

Investigations into the case are still in progress with Chitenhe and Mapondera likely to face abuse of duty as a public officer as defined in Section 174 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

Section 49(1)(b) empowers the State to seize any articles believed on reasonable grounds to provide evidence of the commission or suspected commission of an offence in Zimbabwe or outside.

Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) spokesperson Mr John Makamure confirmed the development adding that the nature of the charges will be revealed in court.
