Kariba town clerk arrested

Walter Nyamukondiwa Kariba Bureau
Kariba Municipality town clerk Mr Richard Kamhoti has been arrested as the dragnet on corruption sweeps through the resort town.

Kamhoti’s arrest comes barely a day after finance director Saratiere Chitenhe and MDC Alliance councillor Tendai Mapondera (Ward 5) were nabbed this Monday.

The three are now expected to appear before a Chinhoyi Magistrate tomorrow.

Kariba resident magistrate Mr Tawanda Mhlanga could not preside over the initial remand hearing as he is reportedly off duty. Indications are that the two will be transported to Chinhoyi this evening or early tomorrow morning.

Kamhoti, Chitenhe and Mapondera will face abuse of duty as a public officer as defined in Section 174 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

Section 49(1)(b) empowers the State to seize any articles believed on reasonable grounds to provide evidence of the commission or suspected commission of an offence in Zimbabwe or outside.

Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) spokesperson Mr John Makamure confirmed the development adding that the nature of the charges will be revealed in court.
