Kariba woman trampled to death by elephant while returning from fishing

Kariba, Zimbabwe – In a tragic incident yesterday, Sinai Mpofu, a resident of Kariba, was trampled to death by an elephant while walking home with fellow fishermen before sunset.

Mpofu and her companions were returning from Lake Kariba where they had been fishing when the encounter occurred.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding human-wildlife conflict in the region, particularly as it comes just two weeks after another resident was attacked by an elephant. Local authorities have expressed alarm over these incidents, emphasising the need for measures to protect both the community and wildlife.

Residents in Kariba often find themselves in close proximity to wildlife, especially in rural areas where natural habitats overlap with human settlements. The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority has been alerted to the rising frequency of such encounters and is urged to implement strategies to mitigate risks to local communities.
As discussions surrounding wildlife protection and community safety continue, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those living near wildlife habitats.
