A KAROI man will perform eight months of unpaid work after being convicted of statutory rape.
Misheck Mavakise (20) was found guilty of attempted rape when he appeared before Karoi regional magistrate Solomon Jenya.
Magistrate Jenya sentenced Mavakise to 12 months’ imprisonment, but set aside four months for good behaviour.
Eight months were also suspended on condition he performs community service.
The complainant is a 13-year-old girl.
The court heard that Mavakise and the juvenile were “lovers”.
Prosecuting, Wadzanai Madzorera, told the court that on January 15, this year, Mavakise proposed love to the minor but she turned down his request.
He persisted with his proposal until she accepted.
The court heard that Mavakise gave the juvenile money amounting to US$20 on different occasions. On February 11, Mavakise took the juvenile to his house where she allegedly agreed to stay with him as his “wife”.
He requested to be intimate.
The two had sexual intercourse once without protection.
Her mother was informed about the whereabouts of her daughter and went to Mavakise’s house and took her back home.
A police report was lodged leading to his arrest.
