In an interview last week, town secretary Mr Maxwell Kaitano said efforts to reco- ver the money had been fruitless so far.
“We are still doing very well as a council even though we are owed by our residents.
“Residents owe council about US$1 mil-lion and we are trying to recover it.
“However, we are still carrying out our mandate of providing services,” he said.
He said council was engaging debtors rather than debt collectors to recover the money. However, he said, council is being taken to court by its creditors.
As a result, council has resorted to boosting production at its farms through horticulture and commercial maize.
There are plans to grow 40 hectares of seed maize, 40ha of flu-cured tobacco and 70ha of commercial maize.
He said council expected to raise US$1 million in revenue annually through such activities.
Poultry and piggery businesses are also on the cards.
