Sikhumbuzo Moyo in Binga
THE newly commissioned Kasambabezi Border Post in Binga will promote legal cross-border trade, enhance border security and strengthen long-standing family and cultural ties between Zimbabwe and Zambia, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe has said.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony officiated by Vice President Kembo Mohadi on Friday, Minister Kazembe said the project reflects the Second Republic’s commitment to ensuring inclusive development that leaves no one and no place behind.
He said the border post forms part of President Mnangagwa’s broader development agenda under the Binga Development Initiative, which has transformed the district through strategic investments in infrastructure, health, water, education, aviation and economic development.
“The development also advances His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s drive under the Second Republic to deliver inclusive development and ensure that no one and no place is left behind,” said Minister Kazembe.
He noted that Binga, once regarded as one of the country’s most marginalised districts, has become a focal point for major Government development projects and private sector investment that are creating employment opportunities for local communities.
Minister Kazembe said the commissioning of the border post marks the beginning of a new era of regulated trade, improved security and stronger bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and Zambia.
“For decades, the absence of a formal border post in this district not only bled the national fiscus through smuggling, but also exposed local people to danger as they crossed the mighty Zambezi River using unsafe routes,” he said.
He said construction of the border post commenced in October 2025 and was completed in May this year.
“The development was made possible through one of Government’s strategic partners, GAT Super Sways, a testament to the Second Republic’s commitment to infrastructure development as a catalyst for economic growth,” said Minister Kazembe.
He described the facility as a modern border post designed to efficiently process the movement of people and goods while facilitating legitimate trade and preserving the strong social and cultural ties shared by communities on both sides of the border.
