The group is made up of four talented artistes who hail from Mzilikazi suburb. They are Godfrey “R.A.P.Z” Mpofu, Saziso “Subzero” Moyo, Talent “Krusty” Kaseke and Freddy “B-Milez” Maseko.
The group has also been signed up by one of the city’s renowned producers Terry Banks Beatz and Mr Forbes who have seen artistes such as Pozee passing through their hands.
In an interview, Mpofu said the group came into existence in 2010 and it had always hoped to utilise its talent to tackle through song different societal problems.
“Kasi Lunatics is a group that was formed in 2010 by four talented artistes whose motive was to spread awareness on problems faced in a number of homes such as domestic violence.
Hailing from Mzilikazi, the group shares the same background that their music depicts.
“As a hip-hop group that sings in vernacular, the idea was to reach out to every family that has been affected by endless challenges.
“When we started performing, many looked down upon us probably because of where we come from. The truth is challenges are there in families and at the end of the day they all affect people in one way or the other whether rich or poor,” Mpofu said.
One of the members, Saziso Moyo, said the group has never been demoralised by what people think or say about them.
“No matter what people say or think, we will not be demotivated from singing music that represents our backgrounds,” Moyo said.
The group also said it drew its inspiration from Winky D, Otis Ngwabi, POY and they would try to emulate them to create music that is homegrown.
“Many artistes have lost their sense of originality because they try hard to emulate international artistes in every sense.
“But looking at Winky D, Otis Ngwabi and POY, they sing in a language that can be understood by the nation and such artistes inspire us,” he said.
The group has performed with established artistes such as KG Mafia also from Mzilikazi, PoZee and is also working on a single titled Rudo with POY.
The group’s electro track Tonight from the mix tape Kasi Revolution Volume One (K.R.V.1), has received air play on former disc jockey Ezra “Tshisa” Sibanda’s Hot 09 FM in the UK.
Other tracks include Nguwe Wedwa, a song about challenges faced in marriages and relationships. It describes the unconditional love a man has for his wife despite the daily challenges he faces. The group has tracks like Zwakala that bemoan artistes who look down upon up and coming artistes.
The group last year wowed the audience at Miss Teen Bulawayo at the Amphitheatre.
They also took part in a hip-hop rap competition held at Rainbow Elite and were part of the performing crew at Amakhosi Theatre last week on Friday.
