Katsande one of Supa Diski’s oldest goal scorers

FORMER Zimbabwe captain, Willard Katsande, is the oldest player to have scored in the South African Premiership so far this season.

The ageless workhorse is now at Sekhukhune United after having left Kaizer Chiefs.

His goal against AmaZulu last month came at the age of 35 years, nine months and 12 days.

That puts him ahead of his former Kaizer Chiefs teammate, Bernard Parker, who has rediscovered his goal-scoring form for the Amakhosi after a two-season-long barren run, and already boasts three goals for the campaign. Parker’s most recent goal, a well-taken header, came during Chiefs’ win over Maritzburg United on Sunday, and saw him claim the second spot on the list at 35 years, eight months and five days.

Marumo Gallants’ Lerato Lamola claims the third position on the podium, after he opened his scoring account for the season with the match-winning goal in Saturday’s surprise victory over Kaitano Tembo’s SuperSport United.

The former Golden Arrows front-man added his name to the mix at the age of 35 years, five months and three days, which makes him the only other player aged 35-or-older, to feature among this season’s goal-scoring golden oldies. Elsewhere, the likes of Thamsanqa Gabuza, who has scored six times for the campaign, Orlando Pirates captain Happy Jele, Thamsanqa Mkhize and Amigo Memela also feature.

A total of 165 goals have been scored across the South African top flight this season with nearly a fifth of those efforts coming from the boots, shins and heads of players aged 30 or older. SuperSport United captain, Ronwen Williams, insists they will give their all when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in a Tshwane derby in the DStv Premiership today.

SuperSport will be aiming to get back to winning ways after suffering defeat to Marumo Gallants in their previous encounter last Friday.

Matsatsantsa have now tasted defeat on three occasions while their opponents still unbeaten so far this season.

Kaitano’s side will be desperate to win over the Brazilians at Loftus Versfeld Stadium if they hope to bridge the gap to the top of the standings. “They are the champions and have been doing well throughout the season. They haven’t conceded, so it shows the work they’re putting in on the training ground is working for them,” Williams said.

“We are going to go there and fight. We’ve got our own ambitions and targets.

“Obviously we’ve let ourselves down in our previous results, especially losing at home.

“We want to go out there and rectify our mistakes and give a better account of ourselves.

“We’re going to go out there and fight as much as we respect them we need to go there and fight and battle.

“We’re not going to go there and make it easy for them. We need to get the points on the board and close the gap.

“They are on top, so we want to close the gap and like I said we have our own targets.

“We’re going to go there and fight and hopefully give a much better performance than the previous one.” — Sports Reporter/KickOff.com
