SPORT, Recreation, Arts and Culture Minister Anselem Sanyatwe has urged athletes to steer clear of performance-enhancing drugs and build careers grounded in integrity.

In his remarks delivered by his deputy, Emily Jesaya, at the official opening of the 35th edition of Danhiko Paralympic Games at the Danhiko Project in Msasa, Harare, yesterday, Minister Sanyatwe said the games provided a platform for future stars.

“I am encouraged to hear that talent from these games will be scouted for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games,” he said. “To every athlete here, the door is open. With discipline, hard work and national pride, you too can carry the Zimbabwean flag on the global stage.”

He warned that success must be earned honestly.

“At the same time, I must stress that any success in these games must be built on integrity. I call upon coaches, managers and athletes to shun performance-enhancing drugs,” said Sanyatwe.

Highlighting the dangers of doping, he added: “Doping destroys careers, tarnishes reputations and robs sport of its meaning. Let our victories be pure and our pride be true.”

Sanyatwe reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to using sport as a tool for national growth.

“In this society, sport, recreation, arts and culture are not seen as luxury pastimes, but as powerful engines for national development, youth empowerment, mental wellness, employment creation and social transformation,” he said.

The four-day Danhiko Paralympic Games, which began on Thursday last week and end today, are running under the theme “Inclusive Disability Sport, Leaving No One Behind”.

More than 1 500 athletes from 66 teams across Zimbabwe, joined by invited sides from Zambia, are competing in 10 disciplines.
