Kenya Airways has announced plans to increase flights to Zimbabwe by end of this month in what is set to boost tourist arrivals into the country. Karikoga Kaseke, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) chief executive officer, said the regional airline would increase its flight frequency from 14 to 19 per week. “The increase in flight frequency shows confidence in Zimbabwe as a safe travel destination with the East African airline. The increase is also positive from a consumer point of view as it means the cost of making flights becomes cheaper,” said Kaseke.
“Kenya is the hub of tourism on a regional level. It connects tourists from different places and brings them to the country through its airways.”
He said more Kenya Airways flights would help boost arrivals after KLM Royal Dutch Airlines pulled out recently.
“It has also filled the void left by the departure of KLM Royal Dutch Airline by introducing flights on the Harare to Amsterdam route via Nairobi,” said Kaseke.
He said the tourism sector was also going to benefit immensely from increased flights as accessibility to the country will be easy for international tourists.
Kaseke said Kenya Airways would begin operating 17 passenger flights per week and two cargo flights starting from October 28.
At least 10 airlines have been licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe in the last three months to ply the Zimbabwe route.
Kenya Airways is also in partnership with Aeroflot, Air Europa, Air Xiamen, Czech Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airline.
