THE Tanganda Half Marathon continues to grow and this year’s edition will attract a field of 1 500 athletes, including highly-rated Kenyans.
The race, in its different categories, starts at 6am.
Apart from the battle-hardened Kenyan trio of Cosmas KipKoech, Isaac KipKoech and Daisy Jepkorir, there will also be a Mozambican flavour in Rosa Titosse and Pinto Victor.
The Tanganda Half Marathon is also described as one that demands a lot of physical strength from athletes, given its arduous course that cuts through Mutare’s mountainous terrain.
The annual long distance running competition is sponsored by the Tanganda Tea Company and is organised in conjunction with National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe.
In a statement, the organisers of the competition said:
“We will have 1 500 athletes and it is now fully subscribed. It promises to be a bigger and better event than previous editions and we will also have much bigger prizes than last year with something set aside for record breakers.”
In the female category, Olivia Chitate, Ethel Pangiso and Murove Patience could battle for honours.
Manicaland Athletics Association Board chairman, Joshua ‘Zesa’ Matume, said all is set for the annual event.
“Preparations for the 2024 Tanganda Half Marathon have gone on very well and all is set for the event.
“Three races are lined up for the event. We have 21 kms for the seniors and above.
“There is also a 10 km race, which includes wheel chairs, juniors and seniors.
“The five kilometre fun run includes all age groups. This year there is a notable increase in prize money.
“The first man and woman home will receive US$800 in the 21 km race.
“There will a special prize for the male who will cross the finishing line in less than 1.01.00 and for the female it is less than 1.08. 00. These are the existing records.
“We are expecting more fireworks from Moses Tarakinyu the defending champion, Blessing Wayison, Elijah Mabhunu and Lyno Muchena,” he said.
Last year, the 21km men’s race was won by Tarakinyu of Black Rhinos, in 1 hour 02 minutes 37 seconds.
Veteran runner, Olivia Chitate won gold in the women’s race in 1 hour 15 minutes and 25 seconds.
