NAIROBI. — Kenya Sevens players on Thursday downed their tools over outstanding three months allowances and wanting a review of their terms, even Kenya Rugby Union insisted they had “cleared” the arrears later in the day.
KRU promised to settle the outstanding amounts when the team returned from Gold Coast, Australia after the opening leg of the 2013/2014 International Rugby Board World Sevens Series.
Some of the players contacted confirmed they have not trained since Monday.
Others kept silent.
While a few denied they were not training. But, Sportsnewsarena.com authoritatively confirmed the players are not training.
KRU vice-chairman Sasha Mutai said the players had been paid late Thursday, but some of the players we contacted denied receiving payment.
Kenyan players are the lowest paid among the core teams in the IRB Sevens Circuit.
Just for the record, some of the lowest paid players on the circuit earn about Ksh170 000 (US$2 000).
The perks they are asking for is small change to their colleagues contracted by their Unions.
Players are requesting that their tour allowance be doubled from the current US$100 (Ksh8 500). — AFP.
