More than 15 000 runners are expected to compete in the annual Nairobi marathon on Sunday, the same day the finals of the inaugural East African Elite cricket tournament – involving three Ugandan and one Kenyan clubs – will be played.
Kenya’s national football elections will also be held tomorrow in Nairobi.
“We are not giving any chance to the hooligans. We shall deploy our officers across the city to ensure there is no security threat during the events,” Nairobi deputy police chief Bosita Omukolongolo told reporters, but declined to say how many officers will be involved.
“The police will screen everyone, even the athletes entering the sporting venues. We did this during the African athletics championships last year and we will do it again,” he added.
The Kenyan capital was hit this week by two grenade blasts that killed one person and wounded dozens.
Security officials blame Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab rebels for the explosions. The insurgents have threatened to attack Kenya in retaliation for Nairobi’s military assault against them in the south of the war-torn country. – AFP.
