NAIROBI. – Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta called upon members of the public and businesses to pay their taxes in order to enhance the country’s national development agenda.
Delivering an address during the 10th edition of the Taxpayers’ Day, Kenyatta nonetheless praised Kenyans for their contributions over the years.
“We must be self-reliant, if as a people, we are going to sustain our dignity. For this reason, I applaud you, our taxpayers, for being patriotic and paying your taxes and as such enabling us to take charge of our country’s destiny,” he said in a speech.
He further labelled the day as important as it provided an occasion for the country to recognise and celebrate taxpayers especially for their contribution and productivity that aided national development agenda.
He lauded the Kenya Revenue Authority’s board, management and staff for their dedication and commitment in ensuring that tax is collected on time. The president also noted that the country had taken great strides since independence in the areas of health, education, construction of the road network, rural electrification and provision of clean water.
He pledged to reduce the cost of production in order to lower the cost of goods. He added that construction of a railway line would lower transportation costs and consequently lower the prices of goods.
Kenyatta reassured Kenyans that his government remained committed to lowering the rate of inflation and ensure that the Kenyan shilling’s exchange rate remained stable. – CAJ News.
