Khami Chess Tournament postponed

THE Khami Chess Tournament scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed due to President Mugabe’s rally at White City Stadium on the same day. The spokesman for the Bulawayo Chess Club, Moses Mutipforo, said they could not have the tournament on the same day with the star rally at the same venue.

“Khami Prison can no longer host us due to a star rally to be addressed by President Mugabe at White City Stadium this Saturday.

“Another date for the tournament is going to be advised next week,” said Mutipforo.

He apologised for any inconvenience caused to the teams that had already registered, sponsors and fans.

Mutipforo said the tournament being held for the first time, was meant to  promote chess league as well as revive the sport in the region.

“We want to build an association so that we can create the Bulawayo Chess League but first we need to know the teams hence we organised this tournament,” said Mutipforo.

Registration is $30.
Teams are still welcome to register as the tournament will take place after the harmonised elections set for 31 July.

Each team will have four players.
Bulawayo Polytechnic, Hillside Teachers  College and School of Mines are among the ten teams that have registered to participate in the tournament so far.
